According to an international survey* of 400 participants from 44 different countries, here are the TOP 10 benefits of meditation:

Yet despite these benefits MOST people do not have a regular meditation practice!


Here are the MOST COMMON reasons why most people do NOT have a regular meditation practice:

#5 Having too many distractions
#6 Not knowing HOW to meditate

I experienced every single one of these obstacles to meditation. Here were some of my thoughts/issues prior to developing the habit of meditation:

"I'm too busy to meditate. I don't have the time. I have too much to do!"
"If I decide to meditate daily, I can do it on my own."
"I need the right place to meditate. I'd like to have a special spot for meditation with candles, etc. When I get this spot, I'll start meditating."
"When I put a meditation CD on I fall asleep."
"There are too many distractions to meditate. Someone always needs me."
"I don't know if I'm meditating 'right.' I'm not good at meditation."

Often we think of meditation as locking ourselves away in a room or monastery for hours on end.

Yes, that would be great if we could do this, but how realistic is this?

Life is full of distractions. If we wait for the distractions to fade, we'll never meditate.

Meditation is, again, a way of living in the moment, even with distractions!

 

I don't know HOW to meditate!



This was a huge obstacle for me! I know that I felt like a failure at meditating.

I was taught that meditation was about "getting rid of thought." That would set anyone up for failure.

I felt guilty for having thoughts! I felt like a failure. I had all these judments about myself for not being able to meditate.

Meditation isn't about fighting the thoughts. Whatever you fight only increases! Meditation is about becoming the "observer" of thoughts instead of the reactor.

For example, when I first started meditating, a thought would come to mind like, "What will we do for dinner tonight?" Then that thought would lead to, "I have to go the store and pick up some things." Then that thought would lead to, "What shall I pick up at the store?" Then that thought would lead to, "It's my brother's birthday next week." Then that would lead to, "I miss my family." Which would lead to "I wonder when I'll be planning on visiting them?" or "Are they going to come visit me?" And on and on...

Now with meditation practice, the thought "What will we do for dinner tonight?" may still come up and then I notice it and don't have to follow it out...

Plus, I've learned that there is no "RIGHT" way to meditate. The 21 day meditation program is about finding what works for YOU.
